GreatPing

Your account

How a GreatPing account works without an email or password, how to leave it or delete it, and what to do if you lose your devices.

A GreatPing account is simply a group: your phones and tablets, and the computers they approved. It has no email, password, phone number or name. Each device holds its own keys, and the devices vouch for each other and for the computers.

That has two consequences:

  • There is nothing to steal or leak that would let someone sign in as you. To join your account, someone needs one of your unlocked devices to approve them.
  • There is nothing to recover. If you lose every device, nobody can bring the account back, including us. You start a new one and pair your computers again, which takes a minute per computer.

Sign out of a device

Settings › Sign Out. This device leaves the account and stops receiving alerts. Your other devices and computers are not affected, and get a security notice that it left. Afterwards you can create a new account or join another one on it.

If it is the only device of the account, signing out deletes the account, so the app offers Delete Account instead.

Delete your account

Settings › Delete Account removes the whole account:

  • every other device is signed out and told the account was deleted;
  • every computer is unpaired; its alerts stop until it is paired again with greatping login;
  • alerts, answers, project names and security activity are deleted from GreatPing.

It cannot be undone. A device added in the last 72 hours cannot delete an account that has older devices or computers; the app says from when it can. This keeps a newly added device from wiping out your setup.

You can also delete the account by removing every device, one after another. See Delete your account for what is kept and for how long.

Accounts that are no longer used

GreatPing deletes accounts nobody uses, so nothing lingers:

  • an account that never paired a computer, and whose devices have not been seen for 30 days;
  • an account none of whose devices or computers has been used for 12 months. Its devices get a notice first, and opening the app within 7 days keeps the account.

Lost every device?

Install GreatPing on your new phone, which creates a new account, then on each computer:

greatping logout
greatping login

and approve it on the new phone. Your agents' setup on the computer stays as it was. The old account is deleted on its own once nothing uses it.

If you still have one device of the account, you lost nothing: link the new phone from it, then remove the lost one.

Set up again

Accounts created by early test versions of GreatPing use an older way of checking devices and computers. The inbox shows Set up GreatPing again for them. Delete the account in Settings, start a new one, and pair your computers again with greatping logout and greatping login.

Support

Because an account has no identity, support cannot look it up, change it or delete it for you; only your devices can. When you write to support@greatping.com, include the version details (tap the version line at the bottom of Settings to copy them) and, from the computer, the output of greatping doctor --verbose. Neither contains your prompts, alerts or keys.
