What GreatPing can see
In plain words, what leaves your computer, what our service sees, what it cannot read, and how long anything is kept.
GreatPing sits between your coding agents and your phone. It is built so that the service in the middle learns as little as possible. This page explains it without the cryptography; the Security page has the technical details, and the Privacy Policy the legal ones.
What stays on your computer
When an agent waits for you, GreatPing sends only who is waiting and why: "Claude Code", "Needs your approval". Never:
- the command the agent wants to run;
- the question it asks you;
- file names, paths or code;
- the arguments of a command you run with
greatping run, since they can hold tokens or paths.
The project name is sent only if you turn project labels on.
What only your devices can read
Some things you write do travel: the text of a question you ask with greatping ask, a message from greatping notify, your answer, and project names. They are end-to-end encrypted: locked on the computer or phone that writes them, for the devices and computers of your account only. Our service passes them along but cannot open them, and cannot change them without your devices noticing.
What our service sees
To deliver alerts, the service has to know some things:
| It sees | Why |
|---|---|
| The names of your devices and computers, their systems and app versions | To show them on your other devices and to route alerts |
| Which agent an alert comes from, why, and when it was opened, answered or finished | To know whom to notify and when to stop |
| Which device answered a question | To tell your other devices |
| The approximate city, country and network of each device and computer's latest activity | To show you where an approval request comes from, and to spot devices you do not recognize |
It does not store IP addresses, and it keeps credentials only in a form that cannot be used to sign in.
Apple and Google deliver notifications and see that a notification went to your device. On iPhone and iPad, the notification is decrypted on the device; on Android, it carries only encrypted data until the app opens it.
What is never collected
- No email, password, phone number or name: an account is just a group of your devices.
- No advertising, no data sales.
- No cookies or trackers on this website. We count page visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which uses no cookies and does not identify you.
Usage data, only if you agree
If you choose Share when you set up the app (or later in Settings › Privacy), the app sends product events such as "computer paired" or "question answered", with the platform and app version. They never contain your questions, answers, commands, names, project labels or location. Don't Share sends none. Crash reports, without the content of your alerts, help us fix the app.
How long things are kept
| What | How long |
|---|---|
| A question's or message's text, your answer, project names | 7 days after the alert finishes |
| That an alert happened (agent, reason, times) | 30 days after it finishes |
| Security activity (devices and computers added or removed) | 90 days |
| Your account | Until you delete it, or until nothing has used it for a long time; see Your account |
When you delete your account, everything in it is deleted within an hour; backups that could restore it expire after 30 days.
