GreatPing

Codex

How GreatPing alerts you when Codex finishes a turn, why it does not alert on approvals yet, and how to set it up.

Set up

greatping setup codex

Then trust the hooks: open Codex, type /hooks and trust the GreatPing hooks. Codex runs new hooks only after that, so until you do, nothing alerts you. The app shows "Not run yet: trust the hooks in Codex with /hooks" on the computer's screen while they wait.

What alerts you

MomentAlertClears when
Codex finished its turn and waits for your next messageFinished its turnYou reply, or the session ends

While you use the computer, the alert waits 30 seconds first; a reply in that time means your phone never hears about it.

To turn finished-turn alerts off: greatping setup codex --no-finished.

Why not approvals?

Codex does not yet report reliably that it waits for your approval: its permission event can fire before its own automatic review has decided, and nothing reports when an approval is given. An alert from it would often be wrong, so GreatPing does not guess and alerts only when the turn ends.

If you want to be pinged before a risky step, ask Codex in plain words, for example "ask me on my phone before you deploy". It then uses GreatPing's tools. See Ask in plain words.

Tools that work in the sandbox

The Codex sandbox usually blocks network access for shell commands, so greatping notify from inside Codex would fail. Setup therefore also registers GreatPing's MCP tools with codex mcp add. They run outside the sandbox, so Codex can message you or ask you a question even when its commands have no network.

Plugin or direct setup

  • Direct (default): greatping setup codex installs the hooks, the MCP tools and the skill.

  • Plugin: install through Codex's plugin manager, then configure it:

    codex plugin marketplace add https://github.com/nobottomline/greatping.git
    codex plugin add greatping@greatping
    greatping setup codex

greatping setup codex --migrate moves an existing direct setup to the plugin. Plugin hooks also need to be trusted in /hooks.

Check

greatping doctor

In the app, the computer's screen shows Codex as Automatic with "When it finishes a turn" and when the hooks last ran.

Remove

greatping setup codex --remove # keeps the computer paired

For the plugin: codex plugin remove greatping@greatping.
