GreatPing

Claude Code

How GreatPing alerts you when Claude Code asks a question, needs a permission or finishes, and how to set it up.

Claude Code reports the most of any agent, so GreatPing can alert you on everything that blocks it.

Set up

greatping setup claude

Choose the alerts you want and apply. Then restart running Claude Code sessions so they load the hooks; new sessions pick them up at once. This also works for apps that run Claude Code underneath, such as T3 Code.

What alerts you

MomentAlertClears when
Claude Code asks you to choose or answerHas a question for youYou answer, or the turn ends
It wants to run a tool and needs your approvalNeeds your approvalYou approve or deny, or type your next message
An MCP server asks you to fill in a dialogNeeds your inputThe dialog closes
It finished its turn, if you turned this onFinished its turnYou send your next message, or the session ends

While you use the computer, each alert waits 30 seconds first, so a prompt you answer at the keyboard never reaches your phone. See How alerts work.

When you are not asked

In auto mode, or for tools you allowed permanently, Claude Code decides without asking you. Nothing waits, so nothing is sent.

Finished turns

Off by default: in an interactive session you usually watch the terminal anyway. Turn them on for long runs, such as claude -p jobs or the SDK:

greatping setup claude --finished
greatping setup claude --no-finished # off again

What it never does

  • It never answers a question or approves a permission. The hooks only observe.
  • It never sends the command, the question, file names or your prompt. The alert names the agent, the reason and, if you turned them on, the project.
  • It never blocks Claude Code. The hooks run in the background, and if GreatPing cannot be reached they give up quietly.

Plugin or direct setup

There are two ways to install, with the same result:

  • Direct (default): greatping setup claude writes the hooks, MCP tools and skill into your Claude Code user settings.

  • Plugin: install GreatPing through Claude Code's plugin manager, then let setup configure it:

    claude plugin marketplace add nobottomline/greatping
    claude plugin install greatping@greatping
    greatping setup claude

Setup finds the plugin and configures it instead of adding a second set of hooks. Already set up directly? greatping setup claude --migrate moves you to the plugin and keeps your choices.

Use one or the other, not both. greatping doctor reports a conflict if it finds both.

Check

greatping doctor

It runs the hooks with a test event and tells you if one is broken, outdated or has never run. In the app, the computer's screen shows Claude Code as Automatic with the time the hooks last ran.

To test for real, start a Claude Code session, ask it to do something that needs a permission, step away from the keyboard for two minutes (or wait past the 30-second delay) and leave the prompt open.

Remove

greatping setup claude --remove # keeps the computer paired

For the plugin: claude plugin uninstall greatping@greatping. Restart running sessions afterwards.
