How alerts work
When GreatPing notifies your devices, when it waits, and how an alert ends.
What creates an alert
- Your agent waits. Hooks installed by
greatping setupnotice when an agent asks a question, needs a permission or finishes its turn. See Agents for what each one covers. - You send one.
greatping notify, greatping askandgreatping runwork from any terminal or script. Agents can use the same through MCP tools.
An agent alert says who waits and why: "Claude Code · billing-api, Needs your approval". It never contains the command, the question or file names; nothing from a prompt leaves the computer. The project name appears only if you turn project labels on.
When devices ring
These are the defaults. Each computer has its own settings in the app.
| When | What happens |
|---|---|
| At once | If nobody has used the computer for two minutes, the alert goes to the devices set to First for this computer. |
| After 30 seconds | If you are using the computer, the alert waits this long first. Answer the prompt in time and no device is notified. |
| After 90 seconds | Not opened yet, the alert also goes to devices set to Standard. |
| After 5 minutes | Still waiting, every device gets one reminder, including those set to Backup. |
A device set to Off for a computer never rings for it. A First device that cannot take the alert (paused, in quiet hours, notifications turned off, or never registered for push) does not hold it back from the others.
How an alert ends
- Opening it on any device stops the escalation and reminders, and clears the notification on your other devices. It does not answer anything on the computer.
- Answering at the computer resolves it: when the prompt closes, you type your next message, or the turn ends.
- Answering a question from
greatping askon the phone returns your answer to the command. - Alerts that nobody handles expire. Finished alerts stay in the app under Earlier and History, and their content is deleted 7 days after they finish.
Quiet hours and pausing
- Quiet hours (Settings › Notifications) silence a device during a daily window. You can let decisions and questions through.
- Pause on the device silences it for up to 7 days, from Settings › Notifications or from a notification's Pause for 1 Hour button.
- Pause on the computer silences that computer on every device:
greatping pause 2h, thengreatping resume. Alerts made while paused are listed in the app but ring nobody.
Security notices, such as a new device joining your account, are never withheld.
