GreatPing

Computers

Pair computers, see their agents, choose who gets alerts and how long a computer waits, pause or remove it.

A computer is any machine where you ran greatping login: a laptop, a desktop, a server you work on over SSH. Each one is approved by one of your devices and can then send alerts to all of them.

Pair a computer

Start on the computer

Install the command line tool and run greatping login. It prints a QR code and a code such as K7PD-M4XQ. See the Quick start.

Scan or type the code

In the app, tap Pair a Computer in the inbox or in Settings. Scan the QR code with the camera, or tap to type the code instead. A code is valid for 15 minutes.

Check where it comes from

Before anything is added, the app shows the computer's name and system, and the city, country and network it connects from. Approve it only if it is the computer in front of you. Never approve a code that someone sent you or read to you: whoever started it could then send alerts to your devices.

Approve

Tap Approve and confirm with your passcode, Face ID or fingerprint. The computer and your phone then prove to each other that they saw the same code. If the code was mistyped or changed on the way, nothing is paired, and both sides say so.

The device that approves a computer is set to First for it; your other devices start as Standard.

The computer's screen

Open a computer from the inbox or from Settings › Computers.

Name and system

Name is how alerts and your devices call it. Tap it to rename the computer for all your devices; the computer keeps its own system name. System and GreatPing CLI show the operating system and the version of the command line tool.

Agents

Lists the agents found on the computer and how each one alerts you:

StatusMeaning
AutomaticHooks are installed. The line below says what alerts you and when they last ran.
On RequestOnly the MCP tools are set up: the agent alerts you only when it decides to. Run greatping setup for automatic alerts.
Not Set UpRun greatping setup on the computer.
Needs RepairThe hooks are broken. Run greatping doctor --fix on the computer.

For Codex, Not run yet: trust the hooks in Codex with /hooks means Codex is waiting for you to trust them. Agents are set up on the computer, not in the app.

Pause alerts

Pause Alerts silences this computer on every device, for 1, 3, 8 or 24 hours. Its alerts still appear in the inbox, marked as muted, but nobody is notified. The same works from the computer: greatping pause 2h and greatping resume.

Pausing a computer is different from pausing a device: a device pause silences everything on one device, a computer pause silences one computer everywhere.

Who gets alerts

For each of your devices, choose how it hears about this computer:

ModeThe device is notified
FirstRight away.
StandardAfter the escalation wait, if nobody opened the alert.
BackupOnly with the reminder.
OffNever. Alerts are still listed in its inbox.

If no device is set to First, Standard devices are notified right away. Changing another device's mode asks for your passcode. See How alerts work for the full timeline.

Timing

These settings belong to the computer and are shared by all your devices.

SettingChoicesDefaultWhat it does
Delay While PresentOff, 15 s, 30 s, 1 min, 2 min, 5 min30 sWhile you use the computer, an agent's alert waits this long. A prompt you answer in time never reaches your devices.
Escalation WaitImmediately, 30 s, 90 s, 3 min, 10 min90 sHow long First devices have before Standard devices are notified too.
ReminderOff, after 1, 5 or 15 minutes, or after 1 hour5 minOne more notification to every device, Backup included, if nobody opened the alert.

GreatPing counts you as present when the computer has not been idle for two minutes. Away from it, the delay is skipped and First devices are notified at once.

Project names

Under Privacy, Project Names decides whether alerts from this computer name the project an agent works in, for example "Codex · billing-api". The name is the folder name of the project, and nothing else about it leaves the computer. It is off until you turn it on.

When it is on, the projects the computer has seen are listed. Tap one to give it another name, for example "Client A", or turn on Hide in Alerts to send its alerts without a name. Use Folder Name goes back to the folder name. Changes apply from the computer's next alert. The same can be done on the computer: see Project labels.

Details

The screen also shows when the computer was paired and which device approved it, whether its keys are confirmed, its last activity and the place it last connected from, and how many alerts it sent this week.

Keys should read Confirmed or Approved on another device. Did not match — remove this computer means the computer's keys do not match what your account approved: remove it and pair it again.

Remove a computer

Remove Computer at the bottom unpairs it: it can no longer reach your devices, and it stops sending alerts until you run greatping login again. Your other devices are told with a security notice.

A device added in the last 72 hours cannot remove computers that were paired before it; the screen says from when it can. This protects you if someone gets hold of a newly added device. On the computer itself, greatping logout unpairs it too.
