Glossary
The words GreatPing uses, in one place.
Account: Your phones, tablets and computers, as one group. No email or password; see Your account.
Agent: A coding assistant that works on your computer, such as Claude Code or Codex.
Alert: Anything GreatPing tells you about: an agent waiting, a question, or a message. It appears in the inbox, and notifies your devices according to their settings.
Backup: A device mode: the device gets only the reminder for a computer's alerts. See Devices and routing.
Computer: A machine paired with greatping login. It sends alerts; it cannot change your account.
Decision: An alert where something waits for you: an agent's permission prompt or question, or a question you can answer in GreatPing. Listed first, under Needs a decision.
Delay While Present: How long an agent's alert waits while you use the computer (30 seconds by default), so a prompt you answer there never rings your phone.
Device: A phone or tablet with the GreatPing app, in your account.
Escalation Wait: How long First devices have before Standard devices are notified too (90 seconds by default).
Finished turn: The agent is done and waits for your next message.
First: A device mode: the device is notified right away for a computer's alerts. The device that approved the computer starts as First.
Hook: A small command an agent runs at certain moments, such as when it asks for permission. greatping setup installs GreatPing's hooks; they only observe and never answer for you.
Muted: An alert that did not notify this device, because the device is Off for that computer or the computer was paused.
Off: A device mode: the device is never notified for that computer, but still lists its alerts.
Pairing: Approving a computer on one of your devices, with a one-time code from greatping login.
Pause: Silencing for a while. A device pause silences one device for everything; a computer pause silences one computer on every device.
Project label: The project's name in an alert, such as "billing-api". Off until you turn it on. See Project labels.
Question: An alert you answer in GreatPing, sent by greatping ask or an agent's ask_user tool.
Quiet hours: A nightly window when a device does not notify you, except decisions if you allow them.
Reminder: One more notification, to every device including Backup, when nobody opened an alert (after 5 minutes by default).
Security notice: A notification that a device or computer joined or left your account. Never silenced.
Standard: A device mode: the device is notified if nobody opened the alert within the escalation wait. New devices start as Standard.
